IEEE Access invites manuscript submissions in the area of Mobile Edge Computing for Wireless Networks.

The unprecedented growth of smart mobile devices is boosting the proliferation of the mobile application market. However, the tension between the resource-hungry mobile devices and the computation-intensive mobile applications restricts users’ quality of computation experience. Mobile Edge Computing (MEC), which provides cloud computing capabilities at the edge of mobile networks, has recently emerged as a promising solution to upgrade the mobile computing environment and elevate the mobile computation service to an unprecedented level. Compared to conventional Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC), Mobile Edge Computing, with the ability to access real-time channel and network information, is capable to significantly reduce latency and provide personalized mobile applications. Therefore, it has been regarded as a key technology for 5G networks.

MEC brings many unique design challenges. In particular, the close interaction and integration of the computation process and radio access should be carefully investigated. On one hand, radio propagation characteristics and radio access technologies should be taken into consideration when designing computation offloading strategies; on the other hand, the potential of MEC to improve wireless networks, such as mobility management and content centric networking, should be investigated. Moreover, the privacy and security mechanisms within MEC servers are also key design considerations.

This Special Section in IEEE Access will focus on various design issues for MEC, and aim at bringing together the state-of-art research results and industrial applications. Comprehensive surveys and original contributions, which are previously unpublished and not currently under review by another journal, are solicited in the relevant areas including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Trends and challenges for MEC
  • Channel-aware computation offloading for MEC
  • Joint radio resource and compute resource allocation for MEC
  • MEC for mobility management in wireless networks
  • MEC for content centric wireless networking
  • MEC for network functions virtualization (NFV) and network agility
  • Security, privacy and trust techniques for MEC
  • Performance evaluation of MEC platforms
  • Pricing and billing for MEC
  • Standardization efforts and initiatives for MEC.

We also highly recommend the submission of multimedia with each article as it significantly increases the visibility, downloads, and citations of articles.
