Dr. Shaikh Fattah received Ph.D. degree in ECE from Concordia University, Canada and later he was a visiting Postdoc at Princeton University, USA. He received B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from BUET, Bangladesh, where he is a Professor, Department of EEE and was founding Director, Institute of Robotics and Automation. His major research areas are speech/image/video signal processing, biomedical engineering, generative AI, machine/deep learning, robotics and automation. He published 290 international journal/conference papers and delivered 110+ Keynote/invited talks in many countries.
He was the co-founder of SPS, RAS, SSIT and IAS Bangladesh Chapters and four area specific conferences IEEE SPICSCON. RAAICON, BECITHCON and PEEIACON. His teams from BUET were Champion/Runner-up in IEEE SP-Cup/VIP-Cup in many occasions. He is the founding Chair of IEEE PES Humanitarian Activity Committee (HAC) and served as the Chair of IEEE SSIT Chapters and Chair of IEEE SPS Humanitarian Activity subcommittee. He served as the Chair/Vice-Chair of IEEE Bangladesh chapters: SPS, RAS, EMBS, SSIT, IAS and PES. He also served seven various committees of IEEE Region-10, in particular, in 2023-24 he was the Chair of the IEEE Region-10 AdHoc on Climate Change and Sustainability. He was Bangladesh Section Chair during 2015-16. He is the Vice-Chair of IEEE Smart Village Education Committee, member of IEEE in 2025 Committee, IEEE Roadmap Committee Working Groups, and IEEE PES Workforce Committee. He served IEEE HAC (now HTB) three years as Education Chair, TAB/PSPB (in PSC), EAB, SIGHT, IEEE Public Visibility Committee, IEEE Tellers Committee, IEEE Smart Village Board, IEEE PES Long Range Planning Committee, IEEE SPS Membership Committee, and ICASSP 50 Years Committee.
He was an Editorial Board Member of IEEE Access (2019-24) and IEEE Potentials (2022-23). Currently he is the Senior Editor of IEEE Access. He served five years as the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE PES E-newsletter (2017-22) and four years as the Lead Editor of IEEE R10 Newsletter (2017-20). He served as General Chair of IEEE R10-HTC 2017 and TPC Chair of IEEE TENSYMP2020, 27th ICCIT 2024 and many other IEEE conferences. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and Fellow of IEB.
He received several awards, e.g. Concordia University’s Distinguished Doctoral Dissertation Prize (ENS, 2009), 2007 URSI Canadian Young Scientist Award, Dr. Rashid Gold Medal (M.Sc.), BAS-TWAS Young Scientists Prize (2014), 2016 MGA Achievement Award, 2017 Region-10 HTA Outstanding Volunteer Award and 2018 Region-10 Outstanding Volunteer Award. He has been ranked among the topmost ten researchers in the Scientific Publication Arena of Bangladesh during 2010-2019. He is consistently among the top 2% scientists of the world during 2023-2025 (Stanford/Elsevier). He is a Senior Member of IEEE and a Fellow of IEB.
