About Dr. Saif

Mehrdad Saif received his B.S. degree in 1982, the M.S. degree in 1984, and PhD in 1987, all in electrical engineering. During his graduate studies, he worked on research projects sponsored by NASA Lewis (now Glenn) Research Center, as well as Cleveland Advanced Manufacturing Program (CAMP). In 1987, he joined the School of Engineering Science, Simon Fraser University (SFU) in suburb of Vancouver. From 2002 to 2011, he was the Director of the School of Engineering Science at SFU and oversaw a major expansion of that School. In 2004, he articulated the vision of starting the mechatronic systems engineering program at SFU’s Surrey campus. He planned and rolled out the program at both graduate and undergraduate levels in 2007. From 1993 to 1994, Saif was a Visiting Scholar with the General Motors North American Operation R&D Center, Warren, MI, USA, where he was a member of the Powertrain Control Group, Electrical and Electronics Research Department and worked on engine control and on-board engine diagnostic problems. He has been the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Windsor, Windsor, ON, Canada, since July 2011. In this role, he has overseen the expansion of Faculty of Engineering programs into such areas as aerospace engineering, engineering management, bachelor of engineering technology, mechatronics and others.

His research interests include systems and control; estimation and observer theory; model-based fault diagnostics; computational intelligence applications to condition monitoring, diagnostics and prognostic; and application of these areas to automotive, power, autonomous systems, and other complex engineering systems.

He has published about 300 refereed journal and conference papers plus an edited book in these areas, and has a Google h-index of 37. Dr. Saif has been a consultant to a number of industries and agencies, such as GM, NASA, B.C. Hydro, Ontario Council of Graduate Studies, and others. He served two terms (1995, 1997) as the Chairman of the Vancouver Section with the IEEE Control Systems Society, and is currently a member of the editorial board of the IEEE ACCESS and the IEEE SYSTEMS JOURNAL. Dr. Saif is a Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE), as well as a Fellow of Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). He is also a registered professional engineer in Ontario.

Levent Sevgi (M’99-SM’02-F’09) received his Ph.D. from Istanbul Technical University and Polytechnic Institute of New York, in 1990 under Prof. Leopold B. Felsen’s advisory. He has been with Istanbul Technical University (1991–1998), TUBITAK-MRC, Information Technologies Research Institute (1999–2000), Weber Research Institute/Polytechnic University in New York (1988–1990), Scientific Research Group of Raytheon Systems, Canada (1998 – 1999), Center for Defense Studies, ITUV-SAM (1993 –1998, 2000–2002), Doğuş University (2011-2014), and University of Massachusetts (UMASS Lowell) (2012 - 2013). About Dr. Wang

Ge Wang is the Clark & Crossan Endowed Chair Professor and the Director of the Biomedical Imaging Center, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, USA. He authored the pioneering paper on the first spiral/helical cone-beam/multi-slice CT algorithm in 1991 and ~100 papers on this topic since then. Currently, there are over 100 million medical CT scans yearly with a majority in the spiral/helical cone-beam/multi-slice mode. He pioneered the area of bioluminescence tomography. His group published the first papers on interior tomography and omni-tomography (“all-in-one”) to acquire diverse datasets simultaneously (“all-at-once”) with CT-MRI as an example. In 2016, he published the first perspective on deep tomographic imaging, as a roadmap for this new frontier of machine learning. His results were featured in Nature, Science, and PNAS, and recognized with academic awards.

He wrote over 450 peer-reviewed journal publications, receiving a high number of citations. His team has been in collaboration with world-class groups and continuously well-funded. His interest includes x-ray CT, MRI, optical molecular tomography, multimodality fusion, artificial intelligence and machine learning for medical imaging. Andreas Weisshaar received the Diplom-Ingenieur (Dipl.-Ing.) degree in electrical engineering from the University of Stuttgart, Stuttgart, Germany in 1987, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical and computer engineering from Oregon State University, Corvallis in 1986 and 1991, respectively.
