Green Cloud and Fog Computing: Energy Efficient and Sustainable Infrastructures, Protocols and Applications

Submission Deadline: 15 July 2017

IEEE Access invites manuscript submissions in the area of Green Cloud and Fog Computing: Energy Efficient and Sustainable Infrastructures, Protocols and Applications.

Cloud computing uses an infrastructure that is based on high end servers and a high speed network to provide services related to storage and computation. It continues to evolve as a domain that offers services by managing a pool of high cost resources. An adequate utilization of these resources has been a major concern for the cloud computing paradigm. Similarly, the recently evolved fog computing results in distribution of applications and services closer to the end-users, while supporting the clouds and internet-of-things, simultaneously.

The cloud computing and fog computing domains have emerged as potential candidates for Green Computing in the context of the management of a large number of resources. Consequently, the energy efficiency and sustainability of their resources are becoming main areas of interest for the researchers. Green cloud and fog computing is deemed to address the issues and challenges that may arise for developing energy efficient and sustainable infrastructures, protocols and applications.

The main focus of this Special Section in IEEE Access is to highlight the research work on the issues related to Green Cloud and Fog Computing. This Special Section will cover the topics related to green computing parameters, i.e. energy efficiency and sustainability within the scope of the cloud and fog computing paradigms. It encompasses the use of the service delivery models targeting at reducing power consumption or increasing sustainability. It also covers solutions and algorithms of resource scheduling and offloading techniques, which are energy and sustainability aware. This will provide the global research community to share their research approaches and outcomes while developing environmentally friendly infrastructures, protocols and applications.

The areas of interest include, but are not limited to the following topics:

Infrastructures for Green Cloud and Fog Computing:

  • Energy aware models for cloud and fog computing
  • Virtualization techniques improving energy efficiency
  • Power management in Mobile Clouds Computing (MCC)
  • Optimization techniques for energy consumption in virtual machines
  • Sustainability for MCC components

Protocols for Green Cloud and Fog Computing:

  • Energy Efficient routing protocols
  • Sustainability and disposal of networking resources
  • Protocols for end-of-life management
  • Network communication energy requirements and solutions
  • Attacks affecting cloud & fog computing and countermeasures using energy parameter

Energy aware Applications for Clouds:

  • Minimizing energy for applications running on green clouds
  • Predicting energy requirements for computation offloading and application distribution
  • Energy aware Load balancing and scheduling on servers
  • Algorithms and implementation frameworks with energy efficient storage and computation mechanisms for complex applications
  • Characterization models for energy requirements

We also highly recommend the submission of multimedia with each article as it significantly increases the visibility, downloads, and citations of articles.
